How it's calculated

  • Gross pay is the CTC minus the employer's PF, gratuity and (if it applies) the employer's ESI. Gross is split into basic, HRA and a special allowance.
  • PF: 12% of basic from you and 12% from the employer, on basic up to ₹15,000 a month unless you pick "full basic".
  • ESI applies only when gross pay is ₹21,000 a month or less: 0.75% from you, 3.25% from the employer.
  • Income tax, new regime: ₹75,000 standard deduction; 5% from ₹4 lakh up to 30% above ₹24 lakh; no tax when taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less (so salary up to ₹12.75 lakh), with marginal relief just above it; 4% cess; surcharge above ₹50 lakh.
  • Old regime: ₹50,000 standard deduction, professional tax, HRA exemption, 80C (up to ₹1.5 lakh including your PF), 80D, home loan interest (up to ₹2 lakh) and other deductions you enter.

Questions

What is the difference between CTC and in-hand salary?

CTC is everything the employer spends on you in a year, including its own PF contribution, gratuity and ESI. In-hand salary is your gross pay minus your PF, ESI, professional tax and income tax (TDS).

Which tax regime should I choose?

The new regime is the default and has lower rates: with the ₹75,000 standard deduction there is no tax on a salary up to ₹12.75 lakh. The old regime can work out better if you have large deductions such as HRA, 80C and home loan interest. This calculator shows the tax under both.

Why is basic set to 50% of CTC?

Under the new labour codes, if allowances are more than half of total pay, the extra counts as wages for PF and gratuity. Many employers now keep basic at about 50% of pay. Change it to match your offer letter.
